General Education Core Competencies Assessment

The New Mexico Assessment Task Force, being charged with the development of a system for assessing student learning outcomes in the General Education Common Core, proposes that New Mexico public institutions of higher education take responsibility for the continuous assessment of General Education learning outcomes in each of five areas: :

  • Area I:  Communications
  • Area II:  Mathematics
  • Area III:  Laboratory Science
  • Area IV:  Social/Behavioral Sciences
  • Area V:  Humanities and Fine Arts

The state competencies, outlining learning outcomes being measured in each of the five areas, are listed here State Competencies

Each year, each institution will assess its General Education Common Core Competencies according to a plan developed by the institution using whatever assessment methods are appropriate to their mission and context.  Institutions may choose which areas and courses to assess in a given year, so that their assessments will line up with their own internal assessment procedures.

For example, an institution might assess Area II and III courses in 2011, Area I and V courses in 2012, and Area IV courses in 2013, and repeat the same cycle beginning in 2014.  Alternately, an institution may choose to asses several courses from each area in each year, choosing different courses each year until all have been assessed.

The Core Competencies Reports will include:

  • Competencies being measured
  • Assessment Procedures
  • Assessment Results
  • Use of data to enhance student learning

Institutions will report annually on their assessment progress using this form and reports will be reviewed using the following rubric.

The reports should be sent to core.competencies@state.nm.us by September 30th of each year.
