Private Postsecondary and Proprietary Schools in New Mexico
The New Mexico Higher Education Department provides oversight of all “private postsecondary educational institutions” operating within the state of New Mexico, including
· academic, vocational, technical, business, professional, or
· other schools, colleges or universities, other organizations or persons offering courses, instruction, training or education from a physical site in New Mexico, through distance education, correspondence, or in person.
This section of the Department’s website is designed to provide consumers, students, and businesses with current information and resources regarding private for-profit postsecondary institutions.
There are numerous private postsecondary schools licensed in New Mexico that offer education and training in career fields such as computer technology, nursing, real estate, cosmetology, massage therapy, or trucking.
New Mexico law requires institutions that are not regionally accredited to be licensed with the New Mexico Higher Education Department and institutions that are regionally accredited to register with the New Mexico Higher Education Department in order to legally operate a private postsecondary educational institution.
Out-of-state institutions that pay or compensate personnel to work in New Mexico for the purpose of recruiting students to enroll in the institution’s programs in other states are required to register with the New Mexico Higher Education Department.
